Was Alice's Adventures in Wonderland originally supposed to be a creepy story?

I was told that a long time ago, that Alice In Wonderland wasnt supposed to be a childrens story. I was reading the Wikipedia and a few other cites giving information about the story and it was only mentioned in one. Im confused????
