Can anyone identify this strange bug I found today at my childrens school?

It was about 2 inches long, was mainly red with a little stripe of purple, Long Yellow legs and antennae. Also looked like it had a menacing stinger! It was very unusual to see it in Yorkshire as it looked very tropical! I have got a photo but not sure how to attach it onto here. I really want to find out what it was!!
